Turn Your Home Green for St. Patrick's Day

Plumbing Tips for a Green Home

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and most people look forward to painting the town green. But there is more to the color green than just celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Beyond the festivities and the merrymaking, homeowners could take the green into their homes and make eco-friendly or green choices to save them green. This blog will share tips to help homeowners conserve water and lower their water bills.

Invest in Water Saving Fixtures for the Home

showerMany minor modifications can be made to make homes more eco-friendly. This is especially helpful if one or two appliances or plumbing fixtures are already due for replacement. If this is the case, homeowners should upgrade plumbing fixtures to ones that will reduce water consumption and lower water bills.

One way to do this is to install low-flow showerheads, which reduce the amount of water used from an average of 2.5 gallons a minute with a standard showerhead to less than 2. Water-saving toilets are another option. These toilets use less water per flush; some models also have a dual flush feature. Another way to conserve water is to install touchless faucets, which activate water flow only when a hand comes close to its sensors and automatically shut off when not in use.

Practice Green Habits

Fixtures aren’t the only thing homeowners can modify to practice water conservation. Homeowners should also modify their habits and behaviors to save water and money. Simple choices like turning off the tap when not in use, not leaving the water running when washing hands, or brushing teeth are small yet impactful ways to go green.

Maintaining household appliances and fixtures regularly can also make them more efficient and catch water-wasting issues like leaks early to help save money and resources. Fixing leaky pipes, running appliances like the dishwasher or the washing machine at full loads only, and turning off the water while shaving can also go a long way in helping to conserve water.

Flush With Caution

toiletWhen items other than toilet paper are flushed down the drain, they can cause severe problems for oceans and waterways. These items often clog up sewer systems, leading to an overflow of wastewater into the environment. This wastewater contains pollutants such as chemicals, oils, and grease which can devastate ocean life. It also contains bacteria that can lead to beach and shellfish closures and other health risks.

Furthermore, when items such as paper towels, diapers, or feminine hygiene products are flushed down the toilet, they can also waste a lot of water. Toilets require a certain amount of water to flush away waste effectively. When non-biodegradable items are flushed, they can cause blockages in the pipes, leading to excess water use. Clogs can also lead to other plumbing issues like leaks and burst pipes that can waste even more water and cause water bills to skyrocket.
