Signs Your Toilet Needs Professional Repair
Identify the need for professional plumbing assistance for a clogged toilet before it leads to larger household issues. Watch for these indicators:
- Frequent Clogging: Toilets that clog regularly suggest deeper plumbing problems that need expert attention.
- Overflowing Water: An overflowing toilet can quickly escalate into a household emergency, indicating a serious blockage.
- Gurgling Sounds: Unusual noises from your toilet or drains could mean a venting issue or developing clog.
- Slow Drainage: If your toilet bowl drains slowly, it could be a sign of a partial clog that a plunger can't fix.
- Persistent Bad Odors: Ongoing unpleasant smells may indicate a deeper issue within the toilet system or sewage line that requires professional repair.
What Causes Clogged Toilets?
There are many things that can contribute to a clogged toilet emergency in your home. Many of these problems are difficult to avoid, however, in most cases, they can all be categorized into one of two categories:
- SIMPLE CLOGS: Reserved for clogs created by organic material and non-water soluble items such as diapers or personal care products. Simple clogs are also commonly caused by using too much toilet paper, something that small children who are learning to use the toilet are often guilty of doing.
- FOREIGN OBJECT: As the name suggests, this issue is caused when a foreign object gets stuck in the toilet. Some common objects we pull out of toilets include toothbrushes, cell phones, toys, shampoo bottles, and more. These clogs are also often caused by children who are experimenting to see what will happen. What Causes Clogged Toilets?
How to Prevent Clogged Toilet
Although many clogged toilet issues will sneak up on you and happen unexpectedly, there are a few things you can do as a homeowner to reduce the chances of experiencing one. Some of the most effective best practice methods for preventing clogged toilets include:
- Place a garbage can next to the toilet for non-water soluble items and diapers.
- Install childproof locks on the toilet seat if you have small children who can get into trouble.
- Reduce the amount of toilet paper you use if you can.
- Purchase a thinner ply brand of toilet paper
- If needed, flush twice.
- Never flush food, grease, or oil down the toilet
Following these steps will help prevent clogged toilets in your home, saving you time and money on repairs.
