Plumbing FAQ's
What Is Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting is an advanced plumbing technique that utilizes high-pressure water jets to clear blockages and clean pipes. The process begins with a thorough inspection of your plumbing system, often using a camera to identify the precise location and nature of the blockage. Once we have pinpointed the problem area, our technicians insert a specialized hydro jetting nozzle into the pipe.
This nozzle is attached to a machine that pumps water at extremely high pressures, allowing the water to blast away built-up debris, grease, and other obstructions. The force of the water not only dislodges tough-to-clear blockages but also scrubs the walls of your pipes. This method is highly effective for handling grease, sludge, and roots, making it a versatile solution.
One of the key advantages of hydro jetting is its environmentally friendly approach. Unlike chemical drain cleaners, hydro jetting relies solely on water pressure, reducing the risk of damage to your pipes and harm to the environment. Additionally, it's a preventative measure, reducing the likelihood of future clogs by thoroughly cleaning your pipe interiors. In contrast to traditional methods like drain snaking, which may only punch a hole through a clog, hydro jetting provides a comprehensive cleaning that helps facilitate improved flow and drainage efficiency.
How Often Should You Hydro Jet Your Sewer Line?
How often you need to hydro jet your home’s sewer line depends on several factors, including the age of your plumbing system, the type of materials in your pipes, and the nature of materials typically flushed down your drains. For most residential properties, we usually recommend an annual hydro jetting service to maintain optimal flow and prevent the build-up of grease, debris, or tree roots that can lead to severe blockages if left unchecked.
If your home has an older plumbing system that experiences frequent clogs or is located near a large number of trees, your sewer line may benefit from more frequent hydro jetting. Additionally, pipes made from materials like clay or cast iron may require more frequent jetting due to their propensity to corrode or crack over time, leading to accelerated debris build-up and root infiltration. In these scenarios, consider scheduling service every six months or so to help keep your lines clear and functioning efficiently.
Our Port St. Lucie hydro jetting experts can assess your specific needs and recommend a tailored schedule based on the unique conditions of your home's plumbing system. Remember, regular maintenance helps prevent emergency plumbing issues and can enhance the longevity of your sewer lines.
What Are the Benefits of Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting offers numerous advantages that make it a preferred method for maintaining and clearing plumbing systems. Its use of high-pressure water streams provides an effective and environmentally friendly solution to a wide range of drainage issues.
Some of the key benefits of hydro jetting include:
- Thorough cleaning. The powerful water jets are designed to eliminate all debris, grease, and residue that may be building up inside your pipes.
- Prevention of future blockages. By eliminating built-up materials and thoroughly scouring the pipe walls, hydro jetting dramatically reduces the chances of clogs in the near future. This preventive approach can save time and money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent plumbing interventions.
- Environmentally safe. Hydro jetting uses only water, making it a chemical-free method that poses no harm to the environment or your plumbing system. It's a safer alternative that avoids the need for corrosive and potentially damaging chemical cleaners.
- Versatility. Suitable for a variety of pipe materials and capable of handling different types of obstructions, including grease, sludge, and roots, hydro jetting is a multipurpose solution applicable to both minor and severe plumbing problems.
- Efficiency. Given its ability to clear a wide range of blockages quickly and effectively, hydro jetting is also a time-efficient solution.
- Non-invasive. Hydro jetting is a non-invasive procedure that does not require digging or trenching, preserving landscapes and your home while offering effective results.

Truly superb and outstanding. We've used several plumbers here in Port St. Lucie and thought they were okay but when our kitchen sink wouldn't drain in our 50+ year old house, the others only charged money without fixing our problem. First Choice not only arrived quickly and charged a very fair price, they worked tirelessly snaking the sink plumbing and roof exhaust until the debris clogging things up was removed and our sink was in excellent working condition. We strongly recommend them.

When Should You Not Rely on Hydro Jetting?
While hydro jetting is an efficient method for clearing blockages and maintaining healthy pipelines, there are scenarios where it may not be the most suitable choice. One significant limitation arises when dealing with severely damaged or fragile pipes. Older sewer lines, especially those made of clay or corroded cast iron, may have weakened over time. The high pressure exerted during hydro jetting could further damage these compromised structures, leading to leaks and potentially costly repairs. In such cases, our plumbers can inspect your home’s piping to determine the most appropriate method of clearing blockages without exacerbating existing damage.
Another situation where hydro jetting might not be ideal is when dealing with extremely large roots. While hydro jetting is highly effective against small and medium-sized root infiltrations, extensive root growth may require additional measures. Roots often enter sewer lines through small cracks or joints and can expand significantly, sometimes requiring mechanical removal – such as root cutting or even excavation – before hydro jetting can be safely undertaken.
Hydro jetting is also not typically recommended when dealing with certain types of clogs, including those caused by hard obstructions like plastic or other materials that are not easily soluble or breakable. In these cases, hydro jetting's high-pressure water might not be sufficient to dislodge or alter the obstruction, requiring alternative solutions like mechanical snaking or pipe restoration techniques.
