4 Ways to Properly Take Care of Your Plumbing System

Plumber Fixing Water Heater
|

Plumbing is something we don’t often give much thought to. The system is already in place, and if something malfunctions, we call a plumber. Pretty easy stuff.

But sometimes our plumbing systems can take a turn for the worse, and we suddenly have the local plumber’s number on speed dial. Check out these four ways to properly take care of your plumbing system, and reduce some of those service calls.

Prevent Pipe Corrosion

Pipe corrosion is the deterioration of water supply pipes. This can happen with any kind of pipes, including: copper, cast iron, lead, PVC, clay, concrete, etc. Pipe corrosion can evolve quickly into leaks, discolored water, and low water flow.

Common causes of pipe corrosion include:

  • Low pH – Acid water from either a well or spring, with a pH lower than 7.0 can cause pipes to rust or oxidize, creating corrosion.
  • High pH – Alkaline water with a pH higher than 8.5.
  • Sand, sediment, or grit in the water can cause hydraulic wear on the piping
  • High amounts of sulfate or iron

Solutions:

  • Conduct a water analysis, checking for pH, hardness, iron, sulfate, chloride, etc.
  • Install a calcite neutralizer to balance pH
  • Set up a phosphate feeder to coat copper pipes and prevent corrosion
  • Regularly clean your pipes

Don’t Use Chemical Clog Removers

It can be tempting to reach for a quick fix when faced with a clogged drain. But chemical clog removers can do more harm than good on your pipes.

The common chemical in commercial cleaning solutions is hydrochloric acid. This chemical is harsh, and can, over time and with frequent use, cause damage to the pipes, and any finishes in your bathroom or kitchen.

Instead of using a declogging product, head to your local hardware store and purchase a drain snake. Snaking your drain will solve the problem, remove the clog, and is inexpensive and chemical free. You can pick one up for around $20.00.

Reduce Water Pressure

High water pressure through your home cannot only increase your water bill, but also your likelihood of leaks. Installing a pressure regulator, on your main water line, will help keep the pressure below 80 psi, and avoid damage.

Pressure regulators can be sold at any hardware store, and range from about $15.00 – $35.00. If you are unsure of how to install this item yourself, contact your local plumber.

How to Identify a Leak

The fastest and most effective way to check for leaks is to do a whole home check.

  • Check your water meter, and record the reading
  • Shut off all water valves, inside and outside
  • Don’t use any water for 10-15 minutes
  • Check the water meter reading again
  • If the reading on the meter spiked, you probably have a leak, and will have to call a plumber
